Moringa is one of the easiest supplements to launch: one ingredient, well-known name, steady search demand. It is also one of the easiest to launch badly — with leaf of unknown origin, no batch testing and a label full of claims no regulator will accept. This guide sets out how to do it properly.

It covers formats, testing, the rules in the US, UK, Ireland and EU, and the practicalities of private label, and reflects how ODOD Group supplies its own moringa capsules and tablets from its own leaf powder.

Capsules or tablets

Capsules are the default: 500 mg of leaf powder in a size-0 vegetarian HPMC shell, no excipients needed, clean label, fast to produce. Tablets hold the same dose in a smaller, cheaper-to-ship form but need a binder to compress and a longer disintegration time; choose a plant-based binder and declare it. Capsules suit premium and "pure" positioning; tablets suit value lines and high-count bottles.

The leaf comes first

Everything that matters about the finished product — colour, microbial count, heavy metals — is set by the powder. Insist on plantation-grown leaf, washed, shade-dried and steam-treated (not ethylene oxide, which is banned for food in the EU and UK), with a batch COA. A filler who buys powder on the open market cannot give you that chain; a supplier who grows and processes the leaf can.

What to test, every batch

  • Microbiology: total plate count ≤ 10⁴ cfu/g, yeasts and moulds, E. coli and Salmonella absent.
  • Heavy metals by ICP-MS: lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury.
  • Pesticide multi-residue screen; ethylene oxide not detected.
  • Fill weight (± 5 %) and disintegration time.
  • Identity of the botanical.

Rules by market

United States. Moringa capsules are dietary supplements. They must be made under 21 CFR 111 cGMP, carry a Supplement Facts panel and the brand's US address, and any structure/function claim needs substantiation and the FDA disclaimer. Sellers into California should check Proposition 65 thresholds for lead and cadmium at their serving size.

European Union and Ireland. Food supplements fall under Directive 2002/46/EC and national rules; several Member States require notification before sale. Moringa leaf is not a novel food. Contaminant limits (lead 3.0 mg/kg) are in Regulation 2023/915. No health claims are authorised for moringa under Regulation 1924/2006.

United Kingdom. The Food Supplements Regulations and assimilated contaminant and claims law apply in the same way; the label needs a UK food business address.

Claims: what you can say

Safe ground: what the product is, the amount per capsule, the daily dose, vegetarian/vegan, origin, "caffeine-free", and how it is made. In the EU and UK, a nutrient claim (for example for iron or vitamin A) is possible only if the daily dose provides at least 15 % of the reference intake — check your own analysis. Not permitted anywhere: curing, treating or preventing disease. In the US, structure/function wording is allowed with evidence and the disclaimer.

Who is responsible

The brand on the label is the responsible food business. The manufacturer supplies a compliant product, the specification, batch COA and manufacturing statements; the brand handles registration or notification, label compliance, claims substantiation and complaint handling. Agree this split in writing.

Private-label practicalities

  • Minimums: about 1,000 bottles per variant, or 50,000 capsules in bulk.
  • Timeline: 45–60 days from approved artwork; 30–45 days for bulk.
  • Bottles: 60, 90 or 120 count in HDPE or amber PET with desiccant and induction seal.
  • Artwork: supply print-ready labels with the regulatory text for each market and language.
  • Stability: 24 months shelf life when kept sealed, cool and dry.

What drives the price

  • Leaf quality and organic certification.
  • Capsule versus tablet; capsule shell type.
  • Count per bottle, bottle type and label finish.
  • Testing scope per batch.
  • Order size and incoterm.

Before your first order

  • Choose format, dose and count; decide pure or blended.
  • Ask for the leaf powder COA and a finished-product sample.
  • Have label text reviewed for your market; remove health claims.
  • Confirm who registers or notifies the product.
  • Start with one or two variants and a realistic minimum.

Frequently asked questions

What is in the capsules?

Moringa oleifera leaf powder — 500 mg per capsule — in a vegetarian HPMC shell. The pure option has no fillers, flow agents or colours. Tablets need a small amount of plant-based binder to hold together, which is declared on the label.

Is the product made under GMP?

Yes. Capsules and tablets are manufactured in a GMP-certified facility with in-process weight checks and finished-product testing, and every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis covering microbiology, heavy metals, disintegration and weight variation.

Can we make health claims on the label?

In the EU and UK there are no authorised health claims for moringa, so the label should state what the product is and its daily dose; nutrient claims are possible only if the daily dose supplies a qualifying amount. In the US, structure/function claims are allowed with substantiation and the standard FDA disclaimer; disease claims are not. We review label text for obvious problems but the brand is responsible for compliance.

Who is responsible for registration and notification?

The brand — the business whose name is on the label. In the US that means FDA facility registration for the brand's operations and compliance with supplement labelling rules; in EU countries that require it, notifying the food supplement to the national authority. We supply the specification, batch COA and manufacturing statements those processes need.

What are the minimums and timings for private label?

About 1,000 bottles per variant, 45–60 days from approved artwork. Bulk capsules or tablets start at 50,000 units with a 30–45-day lead time.

Is it tested for heavy metals?

Every batch, by ICP-MS: lead below 1.0 mg/kg, cadmium below 0.2, arsenic below 0.5 and mercury below 0.05 — well inside the EU limit of 3.0 mg/kg lead for food supplements and low enough to keep typical US serving sizes clear of Proposition 65 warnings.
